Natasha Brill
ASSISTANT COACH
She's back in orange! Tash comes into this role with a huge amount of knowledge and banter. With having played for Midlands hockey and the Black Sticks she has been able to bring her playing career and coaching style together.
What made you want to get involved in the coaching staff for the Mavericks?
I believe in giving back to the community. The Mavericks are in a Ka mau te wehi phase, focusing on developing both whanaungatanga and manaakitanga across the region. This resonates with my experiences as a player in this area, and I want to help current players feel that same sense of belonging and support. What are you most looking forward to about the Premier Hockey League?
I love competitive hockey! As a player, I approached every game as if it were a World Cup final. This competition will create an environment where both coaches and players are challenged, allowing us to effectively build on our skills and craft. What are you hoping to get out of your time working with the Mavericks in the League?
I hope to connect and build whanaungatanga and manaakitanga with players across the motu, while also developing my coaching skills and expanding my coaching kete. -
Sam Child
ASSISTANT COACH
Orange has always looked good on Sam Child (also known as Charlton in her Midlands hockey days). This legend is now ready to give back to the hockey community and there is no better than the orange.
We thought we would ask Sam a couple of questions as we lead into the Premier Hockey League.
What made you want to get involved in the coaching staff for the Mavericks? The Midlands Region was pivotal for me in my hockey development from the age of 14 right through my Black Sticks playing career and always knew that I would some day love the opportunity to return that support that was shown to me. I'm really passionate about supporting players from our region to have positive, competitive and enjoyable hockey experiences to be a part of, and I hope I can contribute to that in some small way.
What are you most looking forward to about the Premier Hockey League?
Seeing some competitive, high level hockey in action in New Zealand. It's been awhile since we've had a competition similar to this one, and I think it's a great opportunity for players to showcase their talent. One off games always make for some exciting hockey!
What are you hoping to get out of your time working with the Mavericks in the League?
Help provide a positive experience for our players involved that players want to come back to each and every year! (And to win, obviously!)
